Grandma is been threatening to leave us for some time now. Every grandchild, including myself, that served a mission heard Grandma Hind say, "I hope I'm still around when you get back." I got back from my mission 14 years ago when Grandma was a mere 79 years old.
Well, Grandma finally decided that she was ready for real this time.
She got sick with pneumonia, had a week stay at the hospital and then stayed at the rehab facility for a couple of weeks but couldn't seem to shake it completely. She decided she didn't want anymore intervention and was put on hospice.
I went to see her right before she went back to Legacy (home) expecting to see a woman on her death bed but she was sitting up getting ready to eat when I got there with Adam and the kids and Dawn and Anna. She talked to us and even laughed once or twice. I thought it seemed like maybe she was going to be okay after all.
She went back to Legacy and had her walker taken away because she kept trying to get out of bed on her own. The night before she died she scooted herself down to an ice cream social in her wheel chair! She was not about to miss out on one her favorite treats.
My dad went to visit her that night and she just kept repeating to him "I'm going away. I'm going away." She was good to her word and passed away peacefully the next day around 1:00 pm.
We were in Kodachrome when she died on May 25th and therefore didn't find out until the day after.
It is bitter sweet feeling. She was 93 years old and missed her husband. The time was right but we will miss her. Her children will miss her.
She has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. There is a hole there now but I have a testimony of the gospel. I will see her again.

I will always remember family time at Grandma and Grandpa's house and all the grandkids gathering around as Grandma got out the ice cream and "name" cones. I'll remember going over to her house and taking sign language classes. I remember her beautiful ceramics and doll collections. I will remember how she always told it like it was. She never held back. She had a beautiful smile I will never forget.
We will miss you, Grandma.

Gladys Merle Hind
1921 ~ 2014
Taylorsville, UT-On Saturday Gladys Allsop Hind told one of her sons, "I am going away." She went away on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at the age of ninety-three. We will miss her but we are comforted by our belief in eternal families.
Gladys was born in Sandy, Utah on March 6, 1921 to Myrle Allsop and Veloy Bateman. At the age of ten she contracted meningitis and as a result lost her hearing. She attended the Ogden Deaf School where she met Spencer Coleman Hind. They were married on December 5, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were together for 68 years before Spencer passed away in 2008.
In spite of what some people might consider a disability Gladys worked hard and created a good life for herself, her husband and her seven children. She was beloved in the deaf community and served the deaf people in many ways.
Gladys and her husband Spencer were pioneers in the leadership of the deaf branch of the LDS church. She served as the first deaf Relief Society President in the church. She was also Mutual President and taught Sunday school, and Relief Society. She and Spencer served as full time missionaries in the Houston Texas Mission.
Gladys loved to interpret songs with sign language and was known for her graceful hands and meaningful expressions as she signed each song. She was always glad to use this talent whenever she had the opportunity. She was an avid reader and an excellent needlewoman. Her home was filled with books and her quilts and afghans grace the homes of her children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren remember ice cream and popcorn on Sunday afternoons.
Gladys is survived by her children; Carol Stirling (Fred) of Boise, ID: Spencer J. (Judy; deceased, Karen), West Jordan, Richard (Cindy), West Jordan, Douglas (Karen), South Jordan, Ken (Valorie), West Jordan, Bill (Cherri), Riverton, Janet Taylor (Boyd), Mesa, AZ. She is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 97 great grandchildren and brothers, Delbert Allsop (Lola), Sandy, UT and Reed Allsop (Marge), Murray, UT. Preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister, Lois Dea.
Services will be held Friday, May 30 at 11:00 am in the LDS Chapel at 6250 South 2200 West, West Jordan, UT where friends may call Thursday, May 29, 6-8 pm and Friday from 9:30-10:30 am prior to services. Interment in the West Jordan Cemetery.
